EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) rubber is, for most intents and purposes, a virgin rubber. It is also much more expensive than recycled rubber of which most of our rubber products are made.
With regards to most of our rubber products including rolls, playground mats and tiles, and most interlocking gym flooring, EPDM rubber is used as a color ''fleck'' option. That is, the virgin rubber is added into the recycled rubber product to give a splash of color to the black material. Because EPDM rubber is more costly to manufacture, color fleck adds cost to the flooring that contains it.
While EPDM is a bit softer and more expensive, it generally doesn't add any quality to the flooring itself. If color preference is not a high priority, 100% recycled rubber can be used in your playground mats or tiles without sacrificing performance or quality.
