Thick Rubber Playground Fall Protection Mats

Our bounce back surfacing is a popular and dependable outdoor surface material that can be found in playgrounds throughout the United States. It provides long-term safety while offering ADA accessibility when used with our ADA border ramp edging. This rubber surface tile is available in many varieties of thicknesses, with the largest being 4 inches.

Unlike other surfacing options, such as wood chips or loose-fill sand or gravel, these tiles do not have to be continually raked to maintain a safe surface for your playground. The solid design of these rubber playground mats makes it impossible for foreign objects to hide out of sight, providing a safer environment for children.

Also, unlike poured-in-place surfacing, you don't have to replace your entire surface if some of the higher-traffic areas begin to wear down. If you have a tile that's wearing down because of heavy use, such as under a swing set or at the base of a slide, you can simply replace that tile. No patching or excessive labor is required.

Our rubber mats work great for surfaces under rock wall climbing areas too. Here are six reasons why you'll want to select outdoor playground mats.

1. Fall Height Ratings

Our 2.5 inch and thicker playground mats outdoor use are designed to meet federally mandated critical fall height requirements for playground equipment up to 10 feet tall. These rubber playground mats have been certified to comply with requirements by ASTM and by IPEMA through TUV/SUD, which is a third-party, independent testing/certification laboratory. Additionally, the manufacturer conducts regular, in-house critical fall height testing as part of its quality control plan.

Each year, more than 200,000 children suffer injuries on playgrounds in the United States. Many of these injuries result from children falling onto inadequate surfacing. Our outdoor playground mats protect children while maintaining an attractive and durable rubber tile design. These playground rubber mats offer an excellent safety surface and the 2.5 inch and thicker feature fall-height ratings for indoor or outdoor usage. It will perform year around in all weather conditions for years.

The fall height protection for each thickness measurement of bounce back rubber playground mats is:

6 feet rating for 2.5-inch thickness
8 feet rating for 3.5-inch thickness
10 feet rating for 4-inch thickness

2. Other Safety Considerations

Beyond the fall height rating of the rubber playground mats, these popular tiles are dependable and tough enough to provide safety to users in other areas. No other playground surfacing material offers the degree of safety that playground mats can provide.

Rubber mulch: Rubber mulch products are easily displaced, resulting in inadequate thickness and protection in large areas of the playground. Children could also swallow, throw, or kick the rubber mulch, creating a serious hazard.

Poured-in-place: Poured-in-place products are subject to climatic variation during installation, which makes the durability and lifespan of the material unpredictable. Additionally, a cement pad offers no cushioning during a fall or could cause a scraping of the skin.

Wood mulch: While wood much has a soft landing surface, such materials are more easily removed than outdoor playground mats made of rubber. This means the wood mulch surface could become bare, increasing the chances of an injury.

Rubber mats provide a solid grip for children running on the playground, which reduces the possibility of slipping. Some other playground surfaces because slippery when wet, creating a potential falling hazard.

3. Color Options

Bounce back rubber playground mats are available in two options for providing color.

EPDM: For coloring, you can select a surface wear layer of colored EPDM rubber granules. This product features colorful standard colors of blue, green, or tan with large black flecks. EPDM mixed color options will enhance the appearance of any playground surfacing. It will last for years and perform with whatever weather conditions you are faced with.

Color topped: A second color option is a surface layer of colored tire crumb rubber. This economical option includes black, red, blue, and green with small black flecks. Tiles with these colors can used in combination to create very appealing playground designs.

4. Installation

You'll love how easy it is to install and maintain these bounce back rubber playground mats. You can economically install these tiles over a variety sub-surfaces. The sub-surface should have good water drainage with a gradient of about 2% before installation. Additionally, the sub-surface must be relatively flat, with no variances greater than 1/8th of an inch every 10 feet. Thoroughly clean the sub-surface of any dirt or particles. If you're installing the outdoor playground mats over cement or asphalt, be sure to repair any damage or cracks in the cement before installing the tiles.

With the sub-surface properly prepared, most people can install these rubber playground mats themselves with a crew of a few people. This cannot be said of poured-in-place surfacing, which requires expensive contractors and specialized equipment to effectively install.

Each tile of the outdoor playground mats product measures 2 by 2 feet, covering 4 square feet of surface area. These tiles do not interlock, meaning you will not lose any coverage area because of an overlap in interlocking design of the tiles.

The individual tiles are heavy, so the installation process is best handled by multiple people working together. The 1.75-inch thick tiles weigh about 25 pounds each, while the 4-inch thick tiles weigh about 40 pounds each.

Each tile is precisely cut to ensure a straight edge, so you'll just lay the tiles side by side to ensure no seams can raise up and trip children using the playgrounds. Fasten the bounce back rubber playground mats to the sub-surface with adhesive. Have any playground equipment in place before installing the playground mats, and use a jigsaw to cut the mats as needed.

With a full complement of ancillary shapes and beveled edges, Bounce Back playground tiles allow for a multitude of playground design options for children.

We also offers ADA approved ramps for the edges of the tile installation, allowing you to finish the area properly to make it accessible to all children. Corner pieces are available too for a nice, finished look in the playground.

5. Tile Maintenance

Our bounce back rubber playground mats are virtually maintenance free. Unlike mulch products, you won't have to perform time consuming maintenance or expensive annual replenishment with our thick rubber tiles.

To clean the tiles, you can start by sweeping them with a broom or washing with a garden hose. A leaf blower also can safely remove debris from the surface of the rubber playground mats.

Should the mats need a more thorough cleaning when used indoors, you can use a disinfectant or a mild detergent with a sponge mop and water. Do not use petroleum based cleaners on these tiles, or you could cause permanent damage to the surface of the tiles.

The outdoor playground mats do not require any specific cleaning to maintain their durability. These tiles are made from durable SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber) tire rubber, giving them durability unmatched by most other surfacing options. They will provide a safe surface for children to play on for many years, even under regular use.

Should an individual tile become damaged or severely worn, you can simply replace it by removing the old tile and installing a new one.

The bounce back rubber playground mats are designed to allow rainwater to flow across the tile surface and away from the playground, as opposed to forming puddles on the surface. This allows children to resume play after bad weather much more quickly than they could on other surfaces, such as poured-in-place. And wet wood mulch surfaces could retain moisture over a long period of time, potentially resulting in the formation of mold or mildew.

6. Environmentally Friendly Material

Our rubber playground mats are made from 100% recycled rubber with a specially-engineered polymer binder. The recycled material in the bounce back mats is from truck tires.

The safety of these rubber mats differs from the safety concerns some people have with rubber crumbs or rubber mulch used in a playground environment. These tiles have a sealed surface, meaning the small pieces of rubber material aren't loose on the surface of the playground. It's important to stick with a trusted manufacturer with rubber playground tiles, which ensures a higher quality product that won't break apart.

Because of the high level of recycled material in each tile, these products meet and exceed the requirements set forth in U.S. Executive Order 13101, Greening the Government. They can be a contributing factor towards LEED Green Building certification.

These outdoor playground mats are a Made-in-the-USA product. The tiles feature a 10-year limited warranty from the manufacturer, which leads the industry. The rubber playground mats are an especially good ordering option for West Coast customers, because they ship from the Pacific Northwest.

When you're ready to order these rubber playground mats, contact our knowledgeable customer service department for pricing information on each color we have available. The customer service personnel also can help you figure out what you need for border pieces to create a finished look for the tile.

These outdoor rubber tile are manufactured using recycled rubber buffings or crumb rubber from reground automotive tires. Black or color from the rubber material will rub off to some extent under normal use. This is common contact wear with this type of rubber tile in this product family type.
